After graduating magna cum laude from Bryn Mawr College in 1967, Dr. Joan Borysenko earned her doctorate in Medical Sciences within the Harvard Medical School, where she completed post-doctoral training in cancer mobile biology. Her initial faculty position was at the Tufts University College of Medicine in Boston. But after the death of her dad from cancer, Joan Borysenko became more interested in the individual with all the disease than in the condition itself, and returned to Harvard Medical School to complete a 2nd postdoctoral fellowship, this time in the modern field of behavioral medication. Under the tutelage of Herbert Benson, M.D., who initially diagnosed the relaxation reaction and brought meditation into medication, Joan Borysenko was granted a Medical Foundation Fellowship and completed her 3rd post-doctoral fellowship in psychoneuroimmunology.
In the early 1980's Dr. Joan Borysenko co-founded a Mind/Body clinic with Dr. Benson and Dr. Ilan Kutz, became licensed as a psychologist, and was appointed teacher in medication at the Harvard Medical School. Her years of medical experience and analysis culminated in the 1987 publication of the New York Times ideal seller, Minding the Body, Mending the Mind, which sold over 400,000 duplicates. The 20th anniversary edition, newly revised, was published in 2007. Author or co-author of 13 alternative books and many sound and movie programs, including the Public Television specialized Inner Peace for Busy Folks, she is the Founding Partner of Mind/Body Health Sciences, LLC found in Boulder, Colorado and the Director of The Claritas Institute Interspiritual Mentor Training Program.
