About the Croatian Language

Croatian code (Croatian: hrvatski jezik) is a South Slavic code that is employed basically in Croatia, by Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in neighbouring nations where Croats are autochthonous communities, and components of the Croatian diaspora. It is occasionally classified as belonging to the Central South Slavic diasystem (moreover called "Serbo-Croatian"). Standard Croatian is dialectally based found on the Western tokavian dialect with Ijekavian reflex of Common Slavic yat vowel. Croatian linguistic region encompasses 2 alternative main dialects, Čakavian and Kajkavian, which lead lexically to the standard code. It is created with all the Croatian alphabet, based on Latin alphabet. The contemporary Croatian standard code is a continuous outgrowth of over 9 100 years of literature created in a mixture of Croatian Church Slavonic and the vernacular code. Croatian Church Slavonic was abandoned by the mid-15th century, and Croatian as embodied in a strictly vernacular literature (Croatian literature) has existed for over five decades.

Also, during the 13th century Croatian vernacular texts started to appear, the most crucial among them being "Istrian land survey", 1275 and "The Vinodol Codex", 1288., both in the Čakavian dialect. The tokavian dialect literature, based virtually only on Čakavian authentic texts of religious provenance (missals, breviaries, prayer books) appeared virtually a century later. The most crucial strictly tokavian vernacular text is Vatican Croatian Prayer Book (ca. 1400). Both the code utilized in legal texts and that employed in Glagolitic literature slowly came under the influence of the vernacular, which considerably affected its phonological, morphological and lexical systems. From the 14th and the 15th decades, both secular and religious songs at church festivals were composed in the vernacular. Writers of early Croatian religious poetry (začinjavci), translators and editors slowly introduced the vernacular into their functions. These začinjavci were the forerunners of the wealthy literary creation of the 15th and 16th decades. The code of religious poems, translations, magic and morality plays provided to the prevalent character of medieval Croatian literature.

The initially strictly vernacular texts in Hrvatski (Croatian) are distinctly different from Church Slavonic dated back to the 13th century. In the 14th and 15th decades the contemporary Croatian code appeared. (It appears in texts as Vatican Croatian prayer book from 1400.) The morphology, phonology and syntax) just somewhat vary from modern Croatian (standard language). The standardization of Croatian code is traced back to the initially Croatian dictionary (Faust Vrančić: Dictionarium quinque nobilissimarum Europae linguarumLatinae, Italicae, Germanicae, Dalmatiae et Ungaricae, Venice 1595) and initial Croatian grammar (Bartul Kaić: Institutionum linguae illyricae libri duo, Rome 1604). The code of Jesuit Kaić's translation of the Bible (Old and New Testament, 16221636; unpublished until 2000) in the Croatian tokavian-ijekavian dialect (the ornate fashion of the Dubrovnik Renaissance literature) is because close to the modern standard Croatian code (issues of orthography apart) because are French of Montaigne's "Essays" or King James Bible English to their respective successorsmodern standard languages.

In late medieval occasions as much as 17th century, the main piece of semi-autonomous Croatia was ruled by 2 domestic dynasties of princes (bani), the Zrinski and the Francopan, who were connected by inter-marriage. Toward 17th cent. both of them tried to unify Croatia furthermore found on the cultural and lingual level, and with perfect foresight they chosen as their official code the transitional Ikavish-Kaykavian dialect, this being an acceptable mean intermediate between all of the main Croatian dialects (Chakavian, Kaykavian and Ikavish-Shchakavian); it really is chosen till today in northern Istra, and in the valleys of the Kupa, Mrenica and Sutla canals, and sporadically elsewhere in central Croatia furthermore. This standardised shape then became the cultivated elite code of management and intellectuals within the Istra peninsula along the Croatian coastline, across central Croatia up into the northern valleys of the Drava and the Mura. The cultural apogee of the unified standard in 17th cent. is represented by the editions of "Adrianskog mora sirena" (Syren of Adriatic Sea) and "Putni tovaru" (Travelling escort), these being found on the highest cultural airplane in modern Europe. But, this initial linguistic renaissance in Croatia was halted by the political performance of both dynasties by the Holy Roman Emperor in Vienna in 1671. Next, the Croatian elite in 18th cent. slowly abandoned this combined Croatian standard, and after an Austrian initiative (Wien 1850), changed them with all the uniform Neo-Shtokavian.
