About the Swedish Language

Swedish is a North Germanic code, spoken by over ten million individuals, predominantly in Sweden and components of Finland, specifically along the coastline and found on the Åland islands. It is to a considerable extent mutually intelligible with Norwegian and to a lower extent with Danish (see incredibly "Classification"). Along with all the additional North Germanic languages, Swedish is a descendant of Old Norse, the popular code of the Germanic peoples living in Scandinavia during the Viking Era. Standard Swedish is the nationwide code that evolved within the Central Swedish dialects in the 19th century and was perfectly established by the beginning of the 20th century. While distinct territorial types descended within the elder rural dialects nevertheless exist, the spoken and created code is uniform and standardized. Some dialects vary considerably within the standard code in grammar and vocabulary and are not usually mutually intelligible with Standard Swedish. These dialects are confined to rural regions and are spoken mainly by little numbers of individuals with low social movement. Though not facing imminent extinction, such dialects have been in decline during the previous century, even though they are perfectly researched and their utilize is frequently encouraged by regional authorities.

The standard word purchase is Subject Verb Object, though this will usually be changed to strain certain words or words. Swedish morphology is synonymous to English, i.e. words have comparatively limited inflections; there are 2 genders, no grammatical situations (though elder analyses posit 2 situations, nominative and genitive), along with a distinction between plural and singular. Adjectives are compared as in English, and are moreover inflected according to gender, amount and definiteness. The definiteness of nouns is marked basically through suffixes (endings), complemented with separate definite and indefinite articles. The prosody attributes both strain and in many dialects tonal attributes. The code has a comparatively big vowel stock. Swedish is moreover notable for the voiceless dorso-palatal velar fricative, a very variable consonant phoneme.

Swedish is an Indo-European code belonging to the North Germanic branch of the Germanic languages. In the established category, it belongs to the East Scandinavian languages together with Danish, separating it within the West Scandinavian languages, consisting of Faroese, Icelandic and Norwegian. But, more recent analyses divide the North Germanic languages into 2 groups: Insular Scandinavian, Faroese and Icelandic, and Continental Scandinavian, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish, based on mutual intelligibility due to thick influence of East Scandinavian (certain Danish) on Norwegian during the last millennium and divergence from both Faroese and Icelandic. (The earlier grouping into East and West will be more helpful for the period before the period of Danish direction in Norway.) By numerous general criteria of mutual intelligibility, the Continental Scandinavian languages can well be considered dialects of the usual Scandinavian code. But, as a result of many 100 years of often very intense rivalry between Denmark and Sweden, including a extended series of wars in the 16th and 17th decades, and the nationalist tips that appeared during the late 19th and early 20th decades, the languages have separate orthographies, dictionaries, grammars, and regulatory bodies. Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish are therefore from a linguistic perspective more precisely described as a dialect continuum of Scandinavian (North Germanic), and a few of the dialects, including those found on the edge between Norway and Sweden -– specifically components of Bohuslän, Dalsland, western Värmland, western Dalarna, Härjedalen and Jämtland –- can be described as intermediate dialects of the nationwide standard languages.
