About the Czech Language

Czech is regarded as the West Slavic languages, together with Slovak, Polish, Pomeranian (Kashubian), and Lusatian Sorbian. It is spoken by many individuals in the Czech Republic and by Czechs all over the planet (about 12 million native speakers in total). Czech is fairly close to Slovak and, to a lower degree, to Polish or to Sorbian in East Germany. Because of official Czechoslovakian government policies of broadcasting in Czech and Slovak for a number of years, the decades born until the mid 1970's could know both languages well. Later decades slowly recognize each alternative less. Children who learned Czech or Slovak after the 1993 split, have more issues learning the additional code. Czech tv, in specific the commercial channels, are nonetheless very favored among viewers in Slovakia. Meanwhile, due to some immigration from Slovakia, the Slovak code could be heard in the Czech Republic.

As in many Slavic languages (except usual nouns in contemporary Bulgarian and Macedonian), numerous words (incredibly nouns, verbs and adjectives) have countless types (inflections). In this respect, Czech and the Slavic languages are closer to their Indo-European origins than different languages in the same family that have lost much inflection. Moreover, in Czech the rules of morphology are very irregular and countless types have official, colloquial and often semi-official variants. The word purchase serves synonymous function as focus and articles in English. Frequently all permutations of words in a clause are possible. While the permutations largely share the same meaning, it is very nevertheless different, because the permutations vary in the topic-focus articulation. As an illustration we will show: Češi udělali revoluci (The Czechs prepared a revolution), Revoluci udělali Češi (It was the Czechs who produced the revolution), and Češi revoluci udělali (The Czechs did create a revolution).

The phonology of Czech will equally be rather difficult for speakers of additional languages. For instance, some words never appear to have vowels: zmrzl (froze solid), ztvrdl (hardened), scvrkl (shrunk), čtvrthrst (quarter-handful), blb (fool), vlk (wolf), and smrt (death). A popular illustration of the is the phrase "strč prst skrz krk" meaning "stick a finger through your throat" or "Smrž pln skvrn zvlhl z mlh." meaning "Morel full of spots wetted from fogs". The consonants l and r could function as the nucleus of the syllable in Czech, since they are sonorant consonants. A synonymous phenomenon moreover happens in American English, where the reduced syllables at the ends of "butter" and "bottle" are pronounced [bʌ.ɾɹ] and [bɑ.ɾl], with syllabic consonants as syllable nuclei. It moreover attributes the consonant ř, a phoneme that is mentioned to be distinctive to Czech and very difficult for foreigners to pronounce. To a foreign ear, it sounds especially synonymous to zh, though a greater approximation can be rolled (trilled) r combined with zh, which was incidentally often selected as an orthography for this sound (rž) for illustration in the royal charter of Rudolf II, Holy Roman Emperor from 1609. The phonetic description of the sound is "a raised alveolar non-sonorant vibrant" which is either voiceless (terminally or upcoming to a voiceless consonant) or voiced (elsewhere), the IPA transcription being [ r̝ ], still this really is contested as not representing the ř sound correctly.
